Eisenbahnmuseum Weimar
Club-run museum in the listed Weimar railway depot with turntable, engine shed and more than 30 historic locomotives – open on Saturdays and during railway festivals.
About the museum
The former Weimar railway depot east of the main station has been protected as a technical monument since 1980. The complex includes an engine shed and a turntable on which steam locomotives were once turned and distributed to their stalls.
The museum is run by the Thüringer Eisenbahnverein (TEV). It grew out of a working group of the GDR's Deutscher Modelleisenbahn-Verband (model railway association) in 1991, was initially active on the grounds of the Erfurter Industriebahn and came to Weimar in the mid-1990s. The association acquired the site in 2018; it is supported by a friends' association founded in 2008.
The collection comprises more than 30 steam, diesel and electric locomotives and is considered the largest collection of historic locomotives in Thuringia. One focus is on older electric locomotives, such as classes E 04, E 42, E 44 and E 94; there are also freight and dining cars as well as streetcars from eastern German cities. Some vehicles are on loan from Deutsche Bahn. Several times a year the association hosts railway festivals with guest locomotives and runs special trips with historic trains.
