About the museum
The Elektromuseum Rendsburg is located in the former administration building of the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Elektrizitätsverband, a brick building erected in 1920 to designs by architect Fritz Höger. Today it belongs to Schleswig-Holstein Netz, the legal successor of the regional energy supplier. The exhibition was designed by the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and looks at both the technical development and the social consequences of electrification.
Spread over nine rooms, the museum shows how electricity came into households at the beginning of the 20th century. Many rooms are set up as period stage sets, such as living, music and children's rooms in the Art Nouveau style, a laundry room and a gentlemen's study. The construction of the electricity grid in Schleswig-Holstein is also explained; in the entrance area the physical basics of electricity are conveyed in an easily understandable way.
Among the curiosities are an electric razor donated in 1948 by actor Hans Albers, an illuminated darning egg, the smallest tube radio of its time ("Knirps") and early household appliances. Volunteer museum guides tell anecdotes about the exhibits.
