About the museum
Elsterberg Castle was built shortly before 1225 and fell into decay after its use as a seat of lordship ended in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1909 the town acquired the ruin and secured it over the following decades; after a comprehensive renovation from 2018 onward, the extensive site again serves as a place for festivities and sightseeing.
In two of the surviving defensive towers, the Vogtländischer Heimatverein Elsterberg, founded in 1992, has set up small exhibitions. The Heimatturm tells mainly of the history of the town and its castle. In the Vogtländische Bauernstube in the left-hand defensive tower are everyday objects of earlier generations, including household items, linen and clothing, an old stroller, a spinning wheel, musical instruments, ice skates and school supplies.
