Museum in the Lower Castle of Greiz on the history of the House of Reuss and the town, with a textile demonstration workshop on Greiz's textile history.
Fifteen international artists show painting, mixed media, figuration, objects and material experiments, and treat “Seelenlandschaft” (landscape of the soul) as an experience rather than a fixed image.
About the museum
For centuries, the Lower Castle was the seat of the lords of Untergreiz and later of the princes of the Reuss Elder Line. After the division of rule in 1564, Heinrich the Elder had his residence built next to the Marienkirche. A major fire in April 1802 largely destroyed the castle; Prince Heinrich XIII then had it rebuilt in the Classicist style, and in 1809 he moved the residence from the Upper to the Lower Castle, where it remained until 1918.
The municipal museum has been housed in the rooms since 1929. The permanent exhibition traces the path from the land of the Vögte (advocates) to the Principality of Reuss Elder Line and shows residential and representational rooms of the 19th century, including the bel étage with stucco work and ceiling paintings, as well as the great hall, winter garden and gallery.
In the former economic rooms of the court, a textile demonstration workshop has existed since 1998. It documents the textile history of Greiz from its beginnings around 1450 to industrial production, and visitors can take part at the looms. The house is supplemented by the marble run landscapes of the Vogtland artist Dietmar Reinhardt, which extend over two floors.
