About the museum

The castle was built around 1492 on behalf of Caspar Metzsch, who had considerable influence at the Saxon court. It is one of the first Saxon residential castles to put comfort and representation ahead of defensive fortifications. The Metzsch family continued to live at the neighboring Mylau Castle and sold the castle in 1578. Later Hans Ernst Bose acquired it. His son Carol expanded the house in the 17th century with two wings and a chapel, and had the ceilings decorated with stucco.

In the 19th century the castle belonged to the Counts of Schönburg-Glauchau, who laid out an English landscape park. In 1944 the town of Netzschkau bought the castle and park. The building then fell into decay: in 1947 the ceiling of the concert hall collapsed, in 1953 the dilapidated wings were demolished, and other buildings followed. The core building from around 1492, with a round tower and a square tower, survived.

Volunteers have secured the castle since 1964, it was renovated in the 1990s, and since 1998 the Förderverein Schloss Netzschkau (friends' association) has looked after its use. On display are largely original furnished rooms, very early forms of stamped stucco, a 4.10-meter-high Baroque tiled stove, a coat-of-arms cabinet, a gilded coffered ceiling and finds from excavations.
