Erinnerungsstätte Matthias Erzberger
Memorial in the birthplace of Matthias Erzberger in Münsingen-Buttenhausen about the Center Party politician and pioneer of democracy.
About the museum
Matthias Erzberger was born in 1875 in Buttenhausen on the Swabian Jura. As a Center Party member of parliament in the Empire, he campaigned for greater parliamentary rights, signed the armistice at Compiègne in November 1918, and as Reich finance minister reorganized the tax and financial system in 1919/20. Right-wing agitation accompanied him for years; in 1921 he was murdered in the Black Forest by members of the Organisation Consul.
In his birthplace, the Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg and the town of Münsingen set up a memorial in 2004. In eleven stations with staged rooms, original objects and audio and film documents, the exhibition leads through his life, his politics and the attacks on him as a representative of the young republic.
The memorial is run by the town of Münsingen; volunteers from the Geschichtsverein Münsingen (local history society) look after visitors and offer guided tours. The Haus der Geschichte provides material for school classes.
