About the museum

The lime kiln in Untermarchtal was in operation from 1923 to 1939 and is the last surviving small lime works with a shaft kiln in the Alb-Donau region. Afterward the buildings served as a carriage shed and stood empty for a long time.

In 1984 the state of Baden-Württemberg bought the site and in 1986 leased it to the Schwäbischer Heimatbund under a hereditary lease. Between 1986 and 1990 it was restored and developed into a technical museum. The museum is run by the local group Untermarchtal.

The complex includes a shaft kiln with a seven-meter chimney and a work hall with largely original equipment for slaking, sieving and bagging lime, which is demonstrated during tours. An exhibition tells the story of lime and cement burning from Roman times to the present.
