About the museum
The Peterstor was built in 1681 as the western entrance to the former Benedictine Zwiefalten Abbey and is the oldest surviving baroque gate building in the town. In 1991/92 it was converted into a local history museum and handed over to the Geschichtsverein Zwiefalten (local history association), which runs the museum on a voluntary basis.
The permanent exhibition covers popular piety in the 19th and 20th centuries, the restoration of the baroque parish and pilgrimage church, today's minster, between 1974 and 1984, the history of the abbey from its founding in the 11th century until its secularization in 1801/03, and the artists and pilgrimage sites of the surrounding area.
With funding from the LEADER Mittlere Alb program, the rooms were modernized in 2024/25, including LED lighting, freestanding display walls, monitors and a wayfinding system. The building also houses a museum shop and an information center for the Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve.
