The exhibition traces the history of children's convalescent cures in Bad Sassendorf from the beginnings to the present day, shows the perspective of the children and addresses the grievances, complemented by portraits by photographer Max Brugger.
About the museum
For centuries Bad Sassendorf was one of the salt-works towns on the Hellweg, where salt was boiled from natural brine; salt production in the town ended in 1952. From the middle of the 19th century onward, brine gained importance as a remedy, and the village developed into a brine and moor spa.
The Westfälische Salzwelten opened in 2015 in the historic farm building of Hof Haulle, a farmstead that has existed for over 600 years between Kolk and Rosenau. A glass cube reminiscent of a salt crystal was inserted into the listed building. The interactive exhibition was funded by the EU, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the municipality. The farmstead also includes a bakehouse and a restored granary.
The museum has no collection of its own; the friends' association looks after objects relating to the use of salt and brine in the Hellweg region and to the town's spa history. The house is operated by Tagungs- und Kongresszentrum Bad Sassendorf GmbH, which also offers temporary exhibitions, tours of the town and spa park, and numerous workshops.
