Haus Dassel
Castle-like manufacturer's villa in Warstein-Allagen with a volunteer-run local history museum in twelve rooms and a park; visits on request.
About the museum
The house goes back to the ironworks owner Victor Röper, who from 1840 built an ironworks in Allagen with at times around 200 employees and had to declare bankruptcy in 1860. After that, the owners changed several times, including the Münster sculptor Jean Baptist Prang and the short-lived Westfälische Marmorwerke. In 1886/87 the Düsseldorf entrepreneur Georg Dassel took over the property, founded the Westfälische Marmor- und Granitwerke, and remodeled the residence several times; the striking tower and the marble decoration still characterize it today.
After the then municipality of Allagen bought it in 1972, the factory buildings were demolished and the grounds were converted into a park, which opened in 1976. The house served for a time as a school and since the mid-1970s has been used by clubs, the local mayor, and as a wedding room.
In the basement, the former school principal Heinz Mus set up a collection of old agricultural implements; together with Karl Rüther and later other volunteers, this grew into a local history museum with twelve collections in twelve rooms, including a Heimatstube (local history room) with a photo panorama of old Allagen and a classroom from the early 20th century. Since the exhibition is barely labeled, it is best experienced on a guided tour.
