About the museum
Grünhainichen was a center of the Ore Mountain toy trade. In 1879 a vocational school was founded there, where young people learned traditional woodworking in the spirit of Ore Mountain craft; in 1900 a workshop building with an assembly hall was added.
The museum is now housed in this assembly hall. The small hall stands out for its semicircular vaulted wooden ceiling; the display cases are still the original fittings. After the vocational school closed, an exhibition was set up here from 1955 onward.
The collection shows regional characteristics from the first decades of the 20th century to today's wood art: candle spinners (Leuchterspinnen), figural and architectural toys with the associated working drawings, pyramids, carved and turned objects, miners and angels, as well as chip-wood boxes and chip-wood trees in many variants.
