About the museum
The hospital was endowed in 1476 by Bernhard von Schönberg from his estate. The present building was erected in 1508 and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Sayda. Until 1945 it provided lodging and meals for sick, poor and needy people; afterwards it served as a residence until living there was no longer possible from 1980 onward.
Since 1993 the building, known colloquially as the "Spittel", has housed a local history museum. Across 17 rooms it shows nearly 5,000 objects, which can be looked at and in some cases touched. The oldest pieces date from the 13th century and document the development of the town; the focus, however, is on the work and way of life of the people of the Ore Mountains.
