About the museum
The Eisenhammer on the Chemnitz river in Dorfchemnitz is one of the oldest craft businesses in Saxony. Its founding year is not known, but in 1365 the Hartitzsch family received the right to operate the hammer. Originally the facility served ore smelting; later, until the 20th century, iron was processed here, cast and forged. In 1615, the Saxon Elector Johann Georg I even inquired in Freiberg about the terms for buying the hammer for his brother.
The hammer works is still operated by water power today and is a testimony to centuries of mining and metallurgy in the Ore Mountains. It has been open to visitors as a technical museum since 1969. It is run today by the Förderverein Eisenhammer Dorfchemnitz (friends' association), founded in 2013.
On a guided tour, visitors can see a tail hammer and the bellows in operation, driven by two water wheels; numerous original tools show the everyday life of the hammer smiths. The grounds also include a local history room and a chair factory with original machinery, which can be visited by prior arrangement. On special days, demonstration forging takes place.
