EXPERIMINTA ScienceCenter
Hands-on museum in Frankfurt-Bockenheim with around 200 experiment stations on mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology.
About the museum
The idea arose in 2006 in a small citizens' initiative that wanted to create a center for mathematics and science culture in Frankfurt and won over partners such as the Physikalischer Verein, Goethe University, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and the city. In November 2007, it presented the exhibition “Experimentiere!” (Experiment!) on the premises of the Physikalischer Verein, with exhibits on loan from Flensburg and Giessen; the huge turnout encouraged the initiators to found the friends' association ExperMINTa in 2008.
The ScienceCenter opened on March 11, 2011, in a building on Hamburger Allee in Bockenheim, initially run by the friends' association with many volunteers. In 2016 it received the City of Frankfurt's Walter-Möller-Plakette, and in 2017 it welcomed more than 100,000 visitors in a single year for the first time. Since February 2020, a nonprofit limited company has run operations, with the friends' association as its shareholder.
On four floors, around 200 stations invite visitors to try things out – from the walk-in giant eye and the kaleidoscope to brain teasers and a flight simulator. There are also science shows, workshops and holiday courses. Because the current building needs renovation, the museum is expected to move to the former tax office in Frankfurt-Höchst in fall 2027; until then it remains open in Bockenheim.
