Technische Sammlung Hochhut
Foundation collection of historic cars, motorcycles, steam engines and motors in the Gallus district – visits with a free guided tour by appointment.
About the museum
The collection goes back to the Frankfurt entrepreneur Fritz Hochhut (1921–2001), whose family business sells and rents out engines, compressors and construction machinery. Over decades, his lifelong passion for machines grew into an extensive private collection of vehicles, engines, steam engines and Stirling engines.
In the late 1990s, Fritz and Karola Hochhut transferred the collection to a non-profit foundation intended to promote culture, research and technical education. Today it is housed in halls on Hattersheimer Straße in the Gallus district, is looked after by volunteers and is part of the Route der Industriekultur Rhein-Main (Rhine-Main industrial heritage route).
True to Hochhut’s principle that engines have to run, a large proportion of the exhibits are in working order; the collection’s own workshops keep them maintained. Highlights include a Bergmann car from 1898, a Stanley steam car from 1902, a roadworthy replica of the Benz Patent Motor Car, a 42-cylinder speedboat engine, and numerous motorcycles and working models. Because the pieces need a lot of explanation, visits are only possible with a guided tour.
