About the museum

The Schirn Kunsthalle opened on February 28, 1986, in Frankfurt's Old Town between the cathedral and Römerberg. The postmodern building, with its long gallery and striking rotunda, was designed by the Berlin firm Bangert, Jansen, Scholz und Schultes, which had won the urban planning competition for the Dom-Römer area in 1980. The name recalls the butchers' sales stalls (Schirnen) where goods were once sold on this spot.

The Schirn has no collection of its own and shows only temporary exhibitions – thematic surveys as well as solo presentations ranging from classical modernism to contemporary art. Under its directors Christoph Vitali, Hellmut Seemann, Max Hollein, and Philipp Demandt, it became one of the most visited exhibition halls in Europe; since 2022, Sebastian Baden has headed the Kunsthalle, which is organized as a limited company (GmbH). In total, the Schirn has welcomed more than ten million visitors to over 280 exhibitions.

Because the facade, insulation, and building services of the listed main building need energy-efficiency upgrades, the Schirn moved temporarily in 2025 to the former Dondorf printing works at Bockenheimer Warte. There it has two exhibition halls totaling about 900 square meters, a café, and new spaces for its children's department, MINISCHIRN. The return to Römerberg is planned for 2028.
