Architectural photographer Manfred Hamm shows images of around 300 industrial heritage sites in Lower Saxony and Bremen and asks which have been preserved, repurposed or are under threat.
About the museum
The Fagus factory in Alfeld was built from 1911 for entrepreneur Carl Benscheidt to designs by Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer. The shoe last factory is regarded as a milestone of modern industrial architecture. It has been a listed monument since 1946, was extensively restored from 1984 onward and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011. Production still takes place here today.
Since 2006, the Fagus-Gropius-Ausstellung in the former warehouse has told the story of the factory. Across roughly 3,000 square meters and five floors, it covers architecture and the Bauhaus, the history of the family business, the making of shoe lasts and a century of shoe fashion, supplemented by interactive and activity stations.
The offering is complemented by the multimedia UNESCO Visitor Center in the former shavings and coal bunker (since 2015), the model cellar and the Fagus Gallery. Visitors can discover the living monument on a factory tour through the ongoing production, or independently with a video guide.
