About the museum
The Schnarchmuseum in Langenholzen, a district of Alfeld, came into being around Expo 2000. It was founded by the internist and sleep physician Josef Wirth. The impetus came from patients who repeatedly brought him anti-snoring devices that had not worked; from this grew the idea of systematically collecting and exhibiting these objects.
Today the collection comprises several hundred exhibits and is continually expanded. On display are, among others, masks, mouth prostheses, nasal clips, vests to prevent sleeping on the back, mechanical and electric wake-up devices, and modern CPAP devices for treating breathing pauses.
The exhibition also traces the medical history of snoring and distinguishes between the bothersome and the medically dangerous form. The museum is run by the Förderverein für Kunst und Kultur in Alfeld und Umgebung e. V. (friends' association for art and culture in Alfeld and surroundings).
