About the museum
The Fasnetsmuseum is located in the "Vorderen Ochsen" (Am Vorderochsen), a former 18th-century estate farm (Lehenshof) of Weingarten Abbey. The Plätzlerzunft Altdorf-Weingarten (carnival guild) set up its guild room there in 1974; since 1975 the building has served as the guild house.
In 1997 the Förderverein Fasnetsmuseum (friends' association) was founded to set up a permanent exhibition of historical costumes (Häs), masks and props in the attic, which had been unused until then. By October 2002 the building had been cleared and gutted and the museum built across three levels, made possible by around 6,500 hours of members' work, donations and support from the city of Weingarten. The museum has been open since 2003.
Over more than 300 square meters it displays over 50 life-size figures, picture documents, carnival props and carved wooden masks. The sequence of the Weingarten Fasnet is staged in scenes in front of painted backdrops, for example the setting up of the Narrenbaum (fool's tree), the Hemdglonker parade and the burning of the Fasnet. There is also a reconstructed sewing room from around 1860 and the legendary figure Laura with the Lauratalgeister. A treasure is the "Narrenbrüter", a carved figure from Tyrol from the 18th century. The museum is run on a volunteer basis by the friends' association, which has more than 100 members, without ongoing public subsidies.
