About the museum
The Feuerwehrmuseum Ravensburg was established in 1983, when the city division of the volunteer fire brigade moved from several locations in the city center into the converted historic Salzstadel (salt storehouse). The building was erected in 1353 to 1355; the attic offered enough space to preserve old fire brigade technology and show it to the public. The fire brigade itself was founded in 1847.
The material was collected and restored by former active firefighters, especially from the senior division (Altersabteilung). Over 600 square meters now show exhibits from the city and the surrounding area, including 15 large appliances such as the city fire pump No. 324 by the Karlsruhe firm Metz and the Magirus patent ladder No. 3 from 1902.
One focus is the alarm system for volunteer forces, from the alarm cannon through the "Weckerlinie" (alarm line) installed in 1905 to digital alerting. Other rooms show uniforms, helmets, breathing and radio equipment, a reconstructed residential house fire with a hand-operated pump, and vehicle models.
