About the museum
The Museum für Klosterkultur (museum of monastic culture) goes back to the collection of Jürgen Hohl, who for decades gathered sacred objects and testimonies of popular piety. He gave his exhibits to the town of Weingarten, which displays them in a 19th-century townhouse directly next to the basilica.
One focus is the veneration of the Holy Blood, which still plays a major role in Weingarten today. Religious habits are also shown in vivid displays, above all the clothing of the men's and women's monasteries of Upper Swabia up until secularization. Priests' and bishops' vestments, convent handiwork and liturgical textiles, mostly made in women's convents, and various forms of chasubles complete the tour.
A large nativity collection from the 18th to the 20th century and numerous Jesulein figures show the variety of Christmas and Jesulein devotion in southern Germany. The collector personally leads groups through the exhibition and offers courses in textile convent crafts so that this tradition is passed on.
