Feldbahnschauanlage Glossen
Field railway display site in the former Glossen quartzite quarry near Mügeln, with 600 mm gauge trains, a stone crusher, a bucket chain excavator, and a museum.
About the museum
Quartzite was quarried in Glossen near Mügeln for decades, first by the Didier-Werke and, in GDR times, by VEB Silikatwerk Brandis. A field railway with a 600 mm gauge carried the crushed rock from the pit to the loading facility at Glossen narrow-gauge station, where it was transferred to the cars of the 750 mm railway. After operations ended, the tracks and facilities fell into disrepair, but the locomotives and equipment remained on site.
In 1993, field railway enthusiasts from Dresden set about clearing the site, and in January 1994 they founded the Feldbahnschauanlage Glossen association. That same year the site was placed under heritage protection; the then municipality of Sornzig-Ablaß acquired the quarry and made it available to the association. The first visitor trains ran on Heritage Open Day (Tag des offenen Denkmals) in 1995.
Step by step, the volunteers made the roughly 1.2-kilometer line to the loading facility operational again and put the large crusher back into service. The former inn at the station became the association's restaurant, and a pump house became the engine shed. Since 2003, the association has been converting the quarry's former staff building into the field railway and quarry museum, and a long storage hall was added in 2019. With the reconstruction of the narrow-gauge line to Glossen in 2006, an interchange station with the Döllnitzbahn was created.
