About the museum

The museum's roots lie in the private collection of Mügeln saddler Richard Hummitzsch, who recovered many archaeological finds in the Döllnitz valley around 1900. After his death in 1916, the town bought the collection, but World War I delayed setting up a museum. In 1925 the upper floor of the newly built house on Schulplatz opened as a museum.

In 1937, archaeologists from Dresden sorted the prehistoric holdings and counted them among the important private collections in Saxony. Old books were added, along with the guild chest with documents from the craft guilds; the oldest document dates from 1506. After World War II, a teacher with his pupils and a local researcher gathered the scattered pieces again, and in 1964 the museum moved into the entire house.

After renovation for the town's 1000th anniversary in 1984, the exhibition was organized into geology, prehistory and early history, town history, and crafts. With funds from the Investment Act for Coal Regions and a competition prize, both buildings were most recently renovated and newly equipped; in February 2024, the MügelnTreff also opened in the former girls' school. The operator is Heimatverein Mogelin e.V.
