About the museum

Behind the Feringer Sach is the Museum- und Heimatverein Unterföhring, founded on 1 November 1982 by the local chronicler H. M. "Caesar" Frey together with seven fellow citizens. Today the association has over 170 members and funds the museum and collection solely through fees and donations; a visit is free of charge.

Over the years, Unterföhring families brought photos, furniture, clothing, tools, farm equipment and everyday objects to the association, which also documents stories and events from the old village and maintains an extensive picture archive. The collection is shown in the museum on Bahnhofstraße in changing exhibitions that take up themes such as needlework, church history, musical instruments or historic views of the village.

The association has other sites as well: the locksmith's workshop on Münchener Straße, bequeathed to the association by the locksmith Simon Hanrieder, is preserved in its original condition and is demonstrated in operation once a year by former master craftsmen. A depot on Gaußstraße opens every September for an open day. Since 2016, the garden of the Zindlerhaus near the S-Bahn has held a Henschel diesel locomotive from 1955, restored by the association, which once hauled clay and spoil on a narrow-gauge railway.
