Schlossmuseum Ismaning
Free local history museum in the gardener's house of the Ismaning palace park on the history of the palace, the Leuchtenberg ducal family, and the municipality.
About the museum
The Schlossmuseum Ismaning opened on July 26, 1986, in the coach house of the Ismaning palace complex and is run by the municipality of Ismaning. The presentation remained almost unchanged for a good two decades until the museum left the coach house in 2008 and temporarily showed parts of the collection in the former peat railway station. In July 2010, it reopened in the gardener's house in the palace park with a significantly expanded permanent exhibition.
The focus is on the history of the palace, which served as a summer and hunting residence for the prince-bishops of Freising until secularization in 1802/03. From 1816 it belonged to Eugène de Beauharnais, Napoleon's stepson, and his wife Auguste Amalie of Bavaria, who had the palace and park redesigned in the Neoclassical style. Scenes with interiors and clothing of the period as well as a collection of portraits and miniatures tell the story of the Beauharnais-Leuchtenberg family.
A second focus is the development of Ismaning in the 20th century, with agriculture, trade, and transport, illustrated for example by a large model of the old train station with the peat railway and a working model from the local paper mill. Special exhibitions on topics of local history complement the permanent exhibition.
The museum also looks after the two Pompeian-style painted state rooms in the palace, now the town hall, as well as the exhibition in the old sawmill of the Seidl-Mühle; both can be visited on guided tours.
