About the museum

The Kallmann-Museum goes back to the painter and draftsman Hans Jürgen Kallmann (1908–1991), who became known above all as a portraitist of famous figures such as Theodor Heuss, Konrad Adenauer, and Pope John XXIII. In 1984 he founded a foundation intended to preserve and exhibit his estate; construction of the museum began in 1989. It opened on July 16, 1992, a good year after Kallmann's death.

The museum stands in Ismaning's palace park and is housed in a replica of the neoclassical orangery that was built in the 19th century for the Duchess of Leuchtenberg. In 2005, for the Federal Garden Show, the US artist Matt Mullican created the walk-in hedge installation "Topiary" in front of the building.

From July 2023 to January 2025 the building was modernized, expanded, and made accessible at a cost of about 5.4 million euros. A covered former courtyard now serves as an additional exhibition and concert space, photovoltaics in the roof and facade cover the electricity needs, and a café was added in the foyer. In total, about 500 square meters of exhibition space are available.

In addition to presentations from Kallmann's work, whose portraits, animal pictures, and landscapes make up the collection, the museum shows several special exhibitions of modern and contemporary art each year. Since 1995 there has also been a renowned concert series featuring jazz and improvised music.
