Brandschutzerziehung im Wandel der Zeit

Newly designed special display case with archival documents on fire safety education – from earlier educational mascots to today's work of the Nuremberg professional fire department.

About the museum

Over the decades, the Nuremberg fire department has built up an extensive collection on the history of fire protection. In 2000, the Förderverein Nürnberger Feuerwehr-Museum e. V. (friends' association) was founded, bringing together members of professional, volunteer and industrial fire brigades, fire service historians, collectors and vintage vehicle enthusiasts. The association aims to preserve evidence of the technical and organizational development of firefighting in the region and make it accessible to the public; in 2015 it had around 250 members.

The exhibition is located in the attic of the rear building of Fire Station 3 (Feuerwache 3) on Jakobsplatz in the old town. Covering around 250 square meters, a tour leads from firefighting in the Free Imperial City to modern technology: exhibits include a wooden fire pump from the 15th century, a section of Nuremberg's first wooden water main, hand-operated pumps, nozzles, uniforms dating back to 1875 and historic fire alarm technology. In 2012 and 2013, the museum was thoroughly renovated and redesigned.

Much of the collection, however, remains out of sight: for lack of a dedicated hall, vehicles, trailers, horse-drawn rigs, steam fire engines and historic ladders are kept in storage and shown only at events. The museum work is done mainly by firefighters on shift duty in their spare time, as volunteers; with changing special display cases, the museum keeps setting new accents.
