The donation by gallerist René Block presents art from Southeastern Europe, including works by Nevin Aladağ, Mangelos, and Sarkis.
The core is a collection of international contemporary art assembled for the Kunsthalle Nürnberg from 1967 under Dietrich Mahlow. In the late 1980s, a citizens' initiative campaigned for a dedicated museum of 20th-century art, and in 1990 the Free State of Bavaria decided to build it.
Volker Staab won the architectural competition in 1991. His building on Klarissenplatz in the old town, whose hallmark is a curved glass façade about 100 meters long, was completed in 1999; the museum opened on April 15, 2000, under founding director Lucius Grisebach. He was followed by Angelika Nollert, Eva-Christina Kraus, and, since 2021, Simone Schimpf.
As the State Museum for Art and Design (Staatliches Museum für Kunst und Design), the Neues Museum brings fine and applied art from 1950 onward together under one roof – a rare combination in the German-speaking world. The design presentation is developed in cooperation with Die Neue Sammlung in Munich and ranges from the postwar period to the present.
The collection grew mainly through donations and long-term loans, for example from Marianne and Hansfried Defet and, in 2013, through the Böckmann Collection with numerous paintings by Gerhard Richter. It is complemented by changing special exhibitions on more than 3,000 square meters.
