About the museum

Kunstmuseum Ravensburg opened in March 2013. It is based on the collection of advertising professional Peter Selinka and his wife Gudrun, who over four decades assembled works of German Expressionism and of the postwar groups CoBrA and SPUR. The Peter-und-Gudrun-Selinka-Stiftung entrusted the collection to the city as a long-term loan; the founding director was Nicole Fritz, and Ute Stuffer has headed the museum since 2018.

The building on Burgstraße was designed by the Stuttgart firm Lederer + Ragnarsdóttir + Oei on a plot formerly occupied by warehouse and commercial buildings. A construction company built it as the developer, and the city rents it. The façade of reused bricks integrates the building into the historic old town, and as the world's first certified museum built to passive-house standards, it set new benchmarks for energy-efficient construction. Among other honors, the building received the German Architecture Prize (Deutscher Architekturpreis) 2013 and was named Museum of the Year in 2015 by the German section of the art critics' association AICA.

The Selinka Collection of around 230 works, with a focus on Die Brücke, Der Blaue Reiter, CoBrA and SPUR, is shown in changing selections. In addition, there are temporary exhibitions on 20th- and 21st-century art as well as formats that bring works from the collection into dialogue with contemporary art.
