About the museum
The museum traces the development of firefighting in Upper Franconia in the 19th and 20th centuries, with a focus on the Hof district. It opened in 1988 after about two years of preparation. It is housed in Schloss Schauenstein, a former knight's castle built in the 13th century and rebuilt after attacks by the Hussites and a fire in the late 15th century.
The castle today belongs to the town of Schauenstein. Alongside the fire service museum, with about 600 square meters of exhibition space, it also houses the town's local history museum.
The fire service museum is run by the association "Oberfränkisches Feuerwehrmuseum e. V.", whose members are mainly active volunteer firefighters. They alone have contributed over 30,000 hours of voluntary work to the renovation and furnishing. On display are hand-pumped fire engines, motor pumps, horse-drawn appliances, fire engines, air-foam sprayers, breathing and gas masks, uniforms, badges, and archival materials and certificates.
