About the museum
The collector couple Stefanie Barbara and Wolfgang Schreiner founded the museum in 1994 in Bad Steben, not far from the former inner-German border. The impetus was Wolfgang Schreiner's work as Eastern Europe director of a company owned by Peter Ludwig, on whose travels he became a connoisseur of contemporary graphic art. The museum opened in September 1994.
Its foundation is the merging of two private collections: prints from the GDR and from Eastern Europe, with a focus on Bulgarian art. The Eastern European collection was donated to the Free State of Bavaria, which supported the founding. Today the holdings comprise around 5,000 works by artists from 25 countries.
Exhibitions are held in the state-owned Kurhaus on the Kurpark, where the lecture hall and reading rooms serve as gallery spaces, and in the foyer of the Klenzebau. The programme changes several times a year between presentations of the collection, international contemporary art, and art from Franconia, Thuringia, Saxony and Bohemia. It is complemented by a print workshop, programmes for children and schools, and a sculpture trail in the town, which has been extended since the 30th anniversary in 2024. A support association has backed the museum since 1999.
