About the museum
In Joditz near Hof, the poet Jean Paul (Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, born 1763 in Wunsiedel) spent the years from his second to his thirteenth year as a pastor's son. He called the village his spiritual birthplace and devoted the longest chapter of his autobiography to it. He created a literary monument to his village schoolteacher with "Schulmeisterlein Maria Wutz".
The museum is privately run by the Schmidt couple and stands in the former parish garden. Where the pastor's garden house once stood, a weaver's cottage was built in 1893. Its rooms and the adjoining barn present the poet's life: downstairs, his childhood in the parsonage, including the farm; upstairs, the successful author with his peculiarities and his fondness for beer.
Nearly all first editions by Jean Paul are on display, along with numerous works by his contemporaries. The reference library comprises over 700 titles with more than a thousand volumes. The museum also publishes its own book series.
