About the museum
The association "Feuerwehrmuseum Preußisch Oldendorf – Schröttinghausen e.V." was founded on May 22, 1980. The idea goes back to a proposal made in 1971 by the then Amt director to the Schröttinghausen village council. The association today has about 220 members, and it is said that every house in the village has at least one of them. The museum was the first of its kind in East Westphalia.
The museum is housed in the listed former village school of 1862, with a small roof turret, pointed-arch windows and a still-working mechanical school clock. Until 1956, up to 90 children at a time were taught here in shifts. Afterwards the fire brigade unit of Schröttinghausen, founded in 1895, first used the room as a common room.
So far, around 1,400 fire service items from four centuries have been collected, some of them unique; about 400 of them are on display in roughly 140 square meters. The exhibition traces the development of firefighting, especially in rural areas, and honors the volunteer work of firefighters.
