About the museum

The Grönegau Museum of the Melle Local History Society preserves the history of the former district of Melle, especially its farming and craft traditions. It stands in Grönenbergpark in the centre of the town, where several relocated half-timbered houses form a small ensemble.

The first museum building to open, on 13 September 1960, was a multi-storey granary with carved brackets and inscription beams dating from 1771, which originally stood on a farm in Schlochtern near Wellingholzhausen. In 1979 the district of Osnabrück made another building available to the society: a cottage from 1655 from Neuenkirchen, which once served as a tenant farmer's house. A bakehouse from 1572 from the Gütersloh area was added in 1988, and a newly built half-timbered coach house in 1997.

On three floors, the granary displays furniture, porcelain, glass, pewter, documents and pictures, as well as finds on prehistory and economic history. The cottage contains a fully equipped smithy, the workshops of a locksmith, a clog maker and a shoemaker, a Bockemühle (a traditional mill), and, in the attic, flax processing and linen weaving. The coach house houses a carpenter's workshop and tools for forestry work and housekeeping. The museum is run by volunteers; in 2007 it received the VGH Foundation's promotional award for an educational project with children.
