Teppich-Museum Tönsmann
Private museum of an Espelkamp carpet store on nomad and Berber rugs, handicrafts and the culture of North Africa, Tibet and Nepal.
About the museum
The museum goes back to the collection of Jürgen Tönsmann, owner of a specialist carpet business in Espelkamp that has existed since 1885, who has gathered rugs and objects from his travels to the Maghreb since the 1960s. When the new company headquarters were built in 1990, the collection received its own exhibition rooms there and became accessible to the public.
After a redesign, the museum reopened in 2009, and in 2010 a section on Tibet and Nepal was added. The focus is on old nomad and Berber rugs from Morocco, along with tools of the weaving families such as knotting frames and hand mills, Islamic North African handicrafts, minerals and Stone Age artifacts. Wall panels explain the craft of rug knotting and the life of the nomads.
Since 2012, a stainless steel stele more than seven meters tall in the form of a sundial has pointed the way to the museum. The museum is a member of the Museumsinitiative in OWL and the network of company museums, as well as a LandArt station of the Minden-Lübbecke district.
