About the museum
In nearly every village, a barn-like flax-breaking hut once stood outside the settlement, where flax fibers were extracted to make linen thread, which was then woven into cloth and clothing. Almost all of these huts have since been torn down or converted. The flax-breaking hut in Burgstall, built around 1780, survived, was placed under historic preservation and restored.
The small museum displays the various tools used to break the flax fibers and spin them into yarn; the drying kiln with its hearth is also still there. The hut lies within the area of a Celtic fortification, which is opened up by an archaeological education trail; information boards from the associated information center stand next to the building. Flax seeds for a home-growing experiment can be obtained at the Creglingen Tourist Information.
