Herrgottskirche
Gothic pilgrimage church in the Herrgottstal near Creglingen with the famous Altar of the Virgin by Tilman Riemenschneider and three other altars.
About the museum
According to tradition, a farmer found a host in his field while plowing in 1384. At this spot in the Herrgottstal, about one kilometer outside Creglingen, the brothers Konrad and Gottfried von Hohenlohe-Brauneck endowed a chapel, which was completed in 1389. It became a pilgrimage destination and at the same time a memorial site for the founding family.
In the first years of the 16th century, Tilman Riemenschneider created for the church the Altar of the Virgin, over nine meters high, with the Assumption of Mary at its center. After the Reformation, the altar was closed and thus preserved from destruction for a long time; the church henceforth served as the cemetery church of the Protestant congregation.
Besides the Riemenschneider work, the church has three further altars from the 15th century, stained glass windows from around 1390/1400 and a large wall painting of Saint Christopher. A special phenomenon is the "Lichtwunder" (miracle of light): from mid-August the evening light falls through the west window exactly onto the figure of Mary.
Today the Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Creglingen (Protestant parish) looks after the church as a site to visit with admission, fixed opening hours and guided tours; the proceeds and donations go toward the upkeep of the building.
