Jüdisches Museum Creglingen
Volunteer-run museum on the Jewish history of Creglingen and Archshofen in a house that belonged to Jewish families for over 250 years.
About the museum
The museum is located at Badgasse 3 in Creglingen's old town. The house was owned by Jewish families from 1618 to 1879 and thus itself tells a piece of local history. In 1999 the Stiftung Jüdisches Museum Creglingen acquired the dilapidated building and had it renovated; the impetus came from the American entrepreneur Arthur S. Obermayer.
On November 8, 2004 the permanent exhibition "Wurzeln und Wege" (Roots and Paths) opened. It shows how Jewish life in Creglingen and in what is now the district of Archshofen developed from the early 17th century to 1939, and follows the life paths of the families who had to leave their homeland.
One focus is the pogrom of March 25, 1933, in which SA men abused Jewish residents. The cattle dealer Hermann Stern, the last Jewish owner of the house, was killed in it – he is regarded as the first fatality of Nazi antisemitism in Württemberg. A Memorbuch (memorial book) commemorates the victims.
The house is run exclusively by volunteers and financed mainly by donations. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the foundation offers changing exhibitions, lectures, concerts, and commemorative events.
