Fliegermuseum Bad Wörishofen
Volunteer-run aviation museum in a historic glider hangar in Bad Wörishofen – with a MiG-21, aircraft engines and an airfield diorama.
About the museum
It began with a fighter jet: in 1994 aviation enthusiasts from Bad Wörishofen acquired a MiG-21 from Upper Lusatia and initially stored it privately. From 1998 the aircraft stood with the glider pilots; a usage agreement was negotiated with the town for their old hangar on the former airfield grounds. In July 2004, 17 members founded the association Fliegermuseum Bad Wörishofen.
In 2007 the association took over the historic glider hangar, cleared it out over months of work and gradually furnished it with models and exhibits. Members contributed aircraft parts, plastic models and a large diorama of the former airfield; a Messerschmitt Bf 109 under reconstruction attracted particular interest for a long time, but is no longer in the museum.
On International Museum Day 2010 the museum opened to the public for the first time and has had regular opening hours since. In addition to the MiG-21, on display are instruments, aircraft engines, original documents and memories of the history of the "aviation town" of Bad Wörishofen. Eyewitnesses such as long-standing association members tell of their experiences in audio contributions. The association has around 40 members and finances the museum from membership fees and donations.
