About the museum
The Flößer- und Schiffer-Museum (Raftsmen and Boatmen Museum) was established in 1968 by the Flößer- und Schiffer-Verein Kamp-Bornhofen, which has existed since 1888, with support from the municipality. It is housed in the town hall on the Rhine bank; many exhibits from the era of rafting and steamboat navigation were provided by residents of Kamp.
One focus is rafting on the Rhine, whose heyday began in the 17th century. The "Holländerflöße" (Dutch rafts) reached lengths of over 500 meters and carried timber mainly to the Netherlands. Around 1900, more than 100 families in Kamp lived from rafting; local firms organized the transport and sale of the raft timber and employed their own raft masters.
Other sections cover towing (Treideln), in which boats were pulled upstream from the shore along specially built towpaths, a practice that ended with the first steamboats; steam towing (Dampfschleppschifffahrt); the Tauerei (rope-towed shipping between 1873 and 1904); and passenger steamers. Those who cannot visit in person can explore the museum online. There is also a station trail on the history of rafting in Kamp-Bornhofen.
