About the museum
Bischberg lies where the Regnitz flows into the Main and was for a long time a village of fishermen and raftsmen. Rafts from the Franconian Forest were lashed together here for the onward journey as far as Holland; timber rafting came to an end in the late 1950s. River fishing also declined sharply with the expansion of the Main and Regnitz, and many old boats, nets and tools were discarded.
To preserve this knowledge and these objects, the local cultural society collected items together with the fishermen's guild and committed residents. A local history exhibition in the Lower Palace (Unteres Schloss) attracted more than 2,000 visitors in 1995. On 9 September 1999, at the suggestion of local historian Josef Kröner, the Förderverein Fränkisches Fischereimuseum (friends' association) was founded, and the municipality provided it with a building plot on Hauptstraße.
The museum was built in stages: the first was inaugurated in 2009, the second blessed in 2015. The fishing exhibition is housed in a renovated former towing hall, while a new building contains carved miniatures on local history and a corner devoted to rafting. The association is run entirely by volunteers.
