About the museum

The Limes-Park Rainau lies on the Raetian Limes, which runs for about six kilometers through the three districts of Buch, Schwabsberg and Dalkingen in the municipality of Rainau. The municipality was formed in 1975 from these three villages. The sites belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Limes.

The park includes the reconstructed Limes watchtower, the Limes Gate near Dalkingen, the Roman bath with civilian settlement on the Buch reservoir, and the Roman fort along the hiking trail. The wooden tower is a reconstruction from 2008 and recalls a watchtower from the year 165 AD; in the Middle Ages, the associated stone rampart was called the "Teufelsmauer" (Devil's Wall).

The Limes Gate is a Roman gate measuring about 15 by 15 meters, dating from around 213 AD. It is now protected in a glass cube and serves as a visitor center. The suspected presence of the emperor in the region makes August 11, 213, a particularly well-documented date. Fragments of a bronze statue that were found are on display at the Limes Museum in Aalen.
