About the museum

The plot on Große Burgstraße in Lübeck's old town was first mentioned in 1289 and had been built on by 1324. At the end of the 15th century, the Bishop of Ratzeburg acquired the house as a town residence, which is how it got the name Bischofsherberge ("Bishop's Lodging"). In 1588 the Protestant cathedral chapter had the dilapidated building demolished and rebuilt. Later it belonged to the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and served as an inn, from 1841 under the name "Zum Großherzog von Mecklenburg". The house has been a protected monument since 1967 (front building) and 1992 (entire ensemble).

The museum is private and run by its owner. It is a specialist museum for historical building research, heritage preservation, urban archaeology and historic building materials. It displays rooms and building elements from different periods: the Gothic predecessor building with the bishop's apartment, the Renaissance building phase of 1588 including construction accounts, a Gothic kitchen, the roof structure, an inn parlor, a refugee apartment from 1945 and an air-raid shelter.

In addition, there is a collection on the Diocese and Principality of Ratzeburg, archives on church and theological history, and paintings by the Eutin painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein. The house can only be visited on a guided tour.
