About the museum

Ötlingen, a hamlet-type district of Weil am Rhein, lies at the southernmost edge of the Black Forest, and its history is strongly shaped by winegrowing and fruit growing. As a counterpart to the Altweiler Agricultural Museum, a museum of rural life in the 19th century was set up there in 1990, in an old half-timbered house: the Gretherhaus from 1596.

The living and sleeping rooms are furnished with typical everyday objects, as if the residents had only briefly left the house to work in the fields. In 1999 the outbuilding was converted into a forge; the exhibits show how horses were shod and agricultural tools were repaired.

The association Verein zur Förderung der Dorfstube Ötlingen e. V. supports the museum, organizes special exhibitions on tradition and art in a regional context, and holds demonstration forging sessions.

• Dorfschmiede – Restored forge in the outbuilding, with exhibits on horseshoeing and the repair of agricultural tools.
