Läuft. Die Ausstellung zur Menstruation

About the museum

The idea of an open-air museum for Schleswig-Holstein took shape in 1958 with the founding of a friends' association. From 1961 the folklorist Alfred Kamphausen developed the site south of Kiel, and the museum opened to visitors in 1965. Farmhouses, cottages, barns, mills and workshops from all parts of the state were dismantled and re-erected in Molfsee; the oldest building is the parsonage from Grube, dating from 1569.

Today, around 60 historic buildings on some 40 hectares convey rural life between the 16th and 20th centuries, complemented by livestock, gardens, a museum railway and demonstrations of traditional crafts. After Kamphausen, Carl Ingwer Johannsen shaped the museum for many years as its director. Since 2013 the museum has been part of the Stiftung Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesmuseen (Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Foundation), and since 2021 it has been headed by Kerstin Poehls.

In March 2021 the Jahr100Haus opened, a new entrance and exhibition building whose shape recalls farmhouses. Its permanent exhibition shows around 350 everyday objects from the 20th century across more than 900 square meters, with additional space for special exhibitions and conferences. In June 2026 the roughly 250-year-old thatched house from Bergenhusen burned down after a lightning strike.
