About the museum
The writer, physician and antifascist Friedrich Wolf (1888–1953) moved in 1948, after returning from exile, into a brick house in the Lehnitz forest settlement. The settlement had previously been built for Luftwaffe officers by prisoners of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. After the war it was temporarily used as a recreation site for former prisoners. In his study Wolf wrote plays, screenplays, radio plays and children's stories; at the same time he was the first ambassador of the GDR to Poland. He died in this house in 1953.
After his death, his wife Else set up an archive together with the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts). The house remains largely in its original condition: the Bauhaus-style furnishings were designed by interior architect Liv Falkenberg. A typewriter, a radio, a small medicine cabinet, pipes and an airplane model made from cooking pots from his internment in the Le Vernet camp tell of his life.
Since 2005 the building has belonged to the Friedrich-Wolf-Gesellschaft (Friedrich Wolf Society), which restored it and runs it as a museum, literary house and memorial. Besides guided tours of the living rooms and garden, there are readings, lectures and conversations with eyewitnesses, as well as programs for school classes.
