About the museum

The Velten museum was founded on July 7, 1905 as a local museum in the service of the tiled-stove and clay products industry and of local heritage preservation. The collection came from donations by stove manufacturers and the municipality and was initially housed in rooms of a school building. In 1947 it reopened as a municipal local history and ceramics museum, but because of the poor condition of the building it had to close in 1968/69; the holdings were sold to Berlin, where they were stored for decades.

After the founding of a friends' association in 1992, the museum returned: since July 7, 1994 it has been housed as the Ofen- und Keramikmuseum on the top floor of the A. Schmidt, Lehmann stove factory. The factory complex from 1905, with its machinery, is a listed monument and one of the last surviving testimonies to the town's former skyline. In 2014 an important stove collection could be acquired.

Across about 900 square meters, the tour covers around 300 years of art and cultural history of the stove, starting with the Berlin tiled stove that made Velten world-famous, and offers insight into the history of ceramics in the Mark Brandenburg in the 20th century. Since 2015 the Hedwig Bollhagen Museum has been part of the complex; its permanent exhibition presents a selection from the ceramic estate of the ceramicist.
