Fürstliche Hofreitschule Bückeburg
Living horse museum in the historic royal stables of Schloss Bückeburg, with school stallions, a stables museum and demonstrations of baroque horsemanship.
About the museum
Horses have been documented in Bückeburg since the late 16th century. Under Count Ernst zu Holstein-Schaumburg, the Marstall (royal stables) and a ballhouse for the ball games popular at the time were built between 1609 and 1622. The counts maintained a renowned stud: in the early 18th century nearly 90 stallions stood in the stables, and Bückeburg stallions were sent to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna for training. In 1764 Count Wilhelm brought back Iberian and North African horses and equipped his bodyguard with black stallions.
Princess Juliane had the ballhouse converted into a riding hall in 1798. Until the mid-20th century, the princely family's riding and carriage horses were kept in the stables; in the 1960s Prince Philipp Ernst handed over the stables and riding hall to the local riding club, which disbanded in 2003.
In 2004, Wolfgang and Christin Krischke, with the support of Prince Alexander zu Schaumburg-Lippe, founded the Fürstliche Hofreitschule as a "living horse museum" – a private initiative that is now a nonprofit. Around 20 school stallions of historic baroque breeds live in the stables; the Marstallmuseum displays more than 1,000 equestrian exhibits from the Middle Ages to modern times. The Renaissance riding hall, with 220 seats, hosts demonstrations, galas, seminars and lessons in the horsemanship of the Old Italian School all year round.
