Schloss Bückeburg
Residence palace of the Princes of Schaumburg-Lippe with the Golden Hall, palace chapel and banquet hall, open to visitors on guided tours.
About the museum
The complex goes back to a border fortress of the Counts of Schaumburg; a simple residential and defensive tower is documented in 1304. In the early 16th century, Count Johann IV fortified the castle with moats and gate structures against artillery fire, and under Otto IV a four-winged complex in the Weser Renaissance style was built within just a few years around the middle of the century.
From 1601, Prince Ernst made Bückeburg his residence town and had the palace splendidly furnished; the Golden Hall with its Mannerist portal and the richly painted palace chapel date from this period. After a fire in 1732, the east and south wings were rebuilt in late Baroque style. In the 19th century the princes had historic rooms restored, and in the 1890s Prince Georg added a New Wing with a large banquet hall.
Since the end of the monarchy in 1918, the focus has been on preserving the building; the Schaumburg-Lippe family still lives in the palace today. Since 1922, selected rooms have been open to visitors on guided tours. The ensemble also includes the mausoleum, built in 1911–1915, with a gold mosaic dome of around 500 m², the freely accessible palace park and the Fürstliche Hofreitschule (Princely Court Riding School) in the stables. Large events such as the Landpartie and the Weihnachtszauber Christmas market attract additional visitors.
