About the museum

The museum's roots lie in the Verein für schaumburg-lippische Geschichte (society for Schaumburg-Lippe history), founded in 1890, from which the Schaumburg-Lippischer Heimatverein later emerged. Its collection was opened to the public as a museum in 1905, making it one of the oldest museums in the Weser region. Since 2013, the Museumsverein Bückeburg has been the operator and legal successor of the Heimatverein.

The museum is housed in the Schaumburger Hof on Lange Straße, a building erected around 1564 and remodeled at the beginning of the 17th century under Chancellor Eberhard von Weyhe. The building itself is part of the exhibition: the entrance hall already tells its architectural history, and the vaulted cellar covers the beginnings of the society and the museum.

In 2022 the permanent exhibition was redesigned. It combines the town history of Bückeburg with the history of the principality and later free state of Schaumburg-Lippe, shows an interactive city model from around 1800, sacred art of the 15th and 16th centuries, and for the first time also the 20th century, with the world wars and the economic miracle, told through personal life stories.

The entire upper floor is devoted to Schaumburg costume, with attention given not only to the garments but also to the people who made and wore them. For its outreach work with children and young people, the museum has repeatedly received the museum education prize of the VGH-Stiftung.
